Chief Bemidji, 1824-1904. Bemidji is the first city on the Mississippi River (along with Lake Bemidji). Bemidji means 'to traverse, or river route'. Chief Bemidji's daughter married a white postmaster. Well he wasn't officially a chief, but that was his honorary title. His real name is Shaynowishkung.
